College students – don’t neglect your teeth! You want them for life! As summer internships and family vacations give way to new class schedules and the inevitable marathon study sessions, don’t neglect your six-month cleanings and check-ups! Some important things to remember about your oral health between check-ups:
♥ Energy drinks are bad for your teeth! The sugars in energy drinks produce acidic conditions in the mouth which will start to dissolve the enamel on your teeth. If you do partake, rinse with water and wait an hour to brush your teeth. This removes those leftover sugars after giving the enamel some time to reharden.
♥ Late night snacks can do serious damage if you fall asleep without brushing (which of course, NO college student EVER does) Brushing for a full 2 minutes twice a day, and flossing (only the teeth you want to keep) daily are the best things you can do between check-ups. This removes the leftover food particles which become the sustenance for those nasty gingivitis-causing bacteria.
♥ Some foods which contain cariostatic factors (factors that protect against cavities) are milk, hard cheeses, unrefined plant foods, tea – especially green – and dark chocolate (sugar-free)
Take care of your body as you’re working out your mind, and we’ll see you on break!
